Wake The Churches

Every morning I use to listen for a word or phrase from the Lord for the day. My wife and I now have devotions every morning, so I’ve gotten away from asking for a word for the day, though it’s still a good idea. Well, one Friday a few years ago, the word that came to me was, “Rest.”

A good word, I thought. Rest in His love, Rest in the knowledge that He is in control, that He knows what’s best.

But as the day went on and the problems and concerns kept weighing on my mind that word, “Rest” just didn’t work. Try as I might, the worries of the day, of the season I have been going through just kept creeping in. Rest, I kept saying to myself, Rest in the knowledge that all things are working for good. That He is in control and knows what He’s doing.

But by the end of the day, it just wasn’t enough. “Lord,” I said, “that’s a hard word to keep.” Rest alone just wasn’t enough to get me through the day. I kept thinking, “How is this going to work out? How am I going to do this and that? What is God going to do about the other?”

All I could say at the end of the day was, “Lord, I’m trying, but it’s really hard. I’m trying to Rest, but I can’t do it.”

That Saturday morning, I heard these words, “Grace and Peace.”

Well, I thought. Peace means just about the same thing as Rest, but when you add Grace in front of it, it makes a big difference. A simple enough word, Grace, that undeserved, unmerited favor that is God’s gift to us.

One definition of Grace I heard once is, getting what you don’t deserve. While the definition of Mercy is, Not getting what you do deserve.

When you really think about it, none of us deserve the Blessings God has given us. We are all sinners; we have all fallen short and missed the mark. But God still Blesses us, saves us. None of us deserve to go to Heaven, to have Eternal life with Him. But He gives it to us as a free gift, through His Grace and Mercy.

When I look back at my life and see all the many Blessing He has given me, even though I didn’t know Him the way I do now, I’m amazed. It was truly Amazing Grace.

And so, when I put Grace in front of Peace, I get the power to Rest. Knowing that He is in control and in charge and that all things do work for good. Just because HE is who HE is, Because HE so Loved me, that HE sent His son to Die for me.

Grace and Peace, made all the difference in the world to how I looked at my problems that Saturday. They were the same problems, the same concerns I had Friday. But with Grace out in front of that word, “Peace,” I can Rest in the knowledge that no matter how badly I’ve messed up, God is doing what is best for me. And all things are working together for good. AS the Lord said to Paul, “My Grace is sufficient.”

Saturday was a much easier day to get through. Every time a problem crept into my mind, all I had to do was think, Grace and Peace, and the problem seemed to fade away.

Sunday morning came and the Lord put it all together.

The word I received from Him that day was, “Love.” And I thought, that’s a good word. But then I started putting it together with the other words I received the previous days and what I found really blew me away.

See what you think…

“Rest” in “Grace and Peace” with “Love.”

Rest in Grace and Peace with Love.

Rest in the fact that God will Bless you through His Grace and give you Peace, because He Loves you.

Rest in the knowledge that God’s Grace is sufficient to give you Peace because He Loves you.

Rest in the Love of God. Know that through His Grace you are saved and will have Peace.

It all comes down to Trusting in God and His word.

He died for You.

He took the pain that should have been yours.

Look back through your life. And realize that Every Good Thing that has happened to you is a Blessing from God, a Gift, through His Grace, because of His Love for you, and Rest in the Peace that comes from that knowledge.
